What the service is for

Reading the construction of a garment from photographs, in order to see which periods its features point to and where those periods do and do not agree. Typical users are people looking at something they have bought or inherited, costume and production designers checking whether a garment sits right for a date, and makers and researchers working on reconstruction.

Reproduction is a legitimate craft, and nothing here treats a reproduction as a lesser object. A garment made carefully to an earlier pattern is a real thing with its own history.

Uses of the output that are prohibited

You must not use anything produced by this service:

in a sale description — a listing, a shop label, a catalogue, an advertisement or any other description of an item offered for sale;
in an auction catalogue entry or any lot description;
in support of an authenticity claim — that an item is genuine, original, period, or by a particular maker;
in an insurance valuation, an insurance proposal or an insurance claim;
as the basis for buying or selling anything, or for advising anyone else to buy or sell; or
as evidence in a dispute about whether an item is what it is said to be.

These are prohibited because the service does not do the work those uses require. It reads construction. It does not authenticate, does not attribute, does not value and does not examine an object in person. Presenting its output as though it did would mislead whoever relied on it.

For any of those purposes, take the item to a specialist. If you need one, we would rather point you towards a professional body than have a reading used in their place.

High-risk uses

The service must not be used to make, or to help make, decisions about:

medical diagnosis, treatment or care;
legal rights, obligations or proceedings;
financial services, credit, lending or insurance underwriting;
safety-critical systems of any kind;
employment, recruitment, promotion or dismissal;
housing, tenancy or immigration; or
policing, prosecution, sentencing or any part of the administration of justice.

It is a research aid for reading how a garment was made, and nothing more than that.

What you may upload

Photographs of garments and parts of garments. You must not upload:

photographs containing people — the service reads garments, not people, and uploads that appear to contain a person are refused;
images you have no right to use;
anything unlawful, or anything depicting abuse or exploitation;
anything containing another person’s personal data — identity documents, letters, labels bearing names or addresses, or a screen showing someone’s account; or
malware, or files crafted to attack the service.

How you may use the service

You must not:

share, resell or provide access to your account;
automate access, scrape the reference table wholesale, or circumvent rate limits and plan allowances;
reverse engineer, decompile or attempt to extract the service beyond what the law permits;
present output as though it came from a person, an institution, an expert or a laboratory;
alter a reading and continue to present it as this service’s output; or
interfere with the service, probe it for weaknesses without permission, or use it to attack anyone else.

The reference table itself is published so that readings can be checked and argued with. Quoting an interval from it in research, teaching or discussion is welcome, provided the prohibited uses above are respected.

If this policy is broken

We may remove an upload, suspend an account or close it. Where we do, we say why and you may reply and ask us to look again. Where a closure is not your fault we refund the unused part of the period you have paid for.

Serious matters — content depicting abuse, attacks on the service — are reported to the relevant authorities.

Report misuse to support@darcyclothinguk.shop. If you have found a security weakness, tell us at the same address and give us reasonable time before disclosing it; we will not pursue researchers who report in good faith.
